W.A. Higgins Middle School
Higgins Middle School is in the process of transforming into the International Studies School of Visual and Performing Arts. In this program, the best of two magnet school themes will be combined to form a unique and outstanding learning opportunity for students in grades 6 through 8. International Studies is the prerequisite to become an International Baccalaureate Middle School.
This program consists of a rigorous inquiry-based curriculum in which students learn the inter-relatedness and connections between diverse topics. It is required that eight specific subjects are taught. These are integrated into five areas of interaction, providing a framework to help the students understand the connections within subjects and between subjects. Required areas of study include a foreign language (Spanish), sciences, humanities, mathematics, and the Arts. To satisfy the Arts requirement, Higgins will emphasize Visual and Performing Arts. Architects are in the process of designing a new music building for band, choir, dance, and eventually orchestra. The façade of Higgins will reflect the new hopefulness embraced by this innovative and challenging program of study.
